If you are new to Arizona Place Names you may want to take a moment to read the About Page to get an idea of what this blog is about and what I am trying to accomplish. Thanks, Peggy

Black Canyon

Yavapai Co.

Smith Map, 1879; Eckhoff, 1880

On the old stage road, Prescott to Phoenix, about 35 miles east of Prescott.  The actual Black canyon was about 10 miles long and was on Bumble Bee.  At Gilette it opened out onto the flat country near the junction of New river and Agua Fria.  "Black Canyon hill" was a "one way" grade.  Drivers waited for each other at certain turn-outs, they blew a horn as a warning of their coming.
