Smith Map, 1879
"Ojos de Los Osos." At southern end Whetstone range, about 35 miles from Tucson.
Here, May 5, 18711, Lieut. Howard B. Cushing, 3rd, U.S. Cavalry, was mortally wounded in a fight with ambushed Apaches under Cochise. Cushing, who came to Arizona in 1869, was one of the famous Cushing brothers. One blew up the Rebel Ram "Albermarle"; another was killed at Gettysburg; still another enlisted in the Navy during the Civil War and died in the service. Fish, very gracefully, calls Cushing "The Custer of Arizona."
